Our humble beginnings
In 1994, long before natural and organic products were widely embraced, Ralph, Harry, and Melanie Rossdeutscher brainstormed the name and set to work creating a sleep system that would help people achieve an uninterrupted, pain-free sleep.
From the beginning, it combined a thoughtfully designed solid wood adjustable base, a Talalay latex slatted mattress, a split-top Talalay latex comfort layer, and natural wool bedding which included a topper, duvet, and pillow. It was independently tested by the Canadian Chiropractic College and found to help reduce chronic back pain while improving sleep quality.
After a year and a half, production began. When we sold our first mattress, from our little showroom in Cambridge, Ontario, we cheered.
Our Natural Focus
In 1997, we achieved another milestone by crafting our first fully organic mattress, reinforcing our commitment to healthier, more natural sleep and making us the first natural and organic mattress manufacturer in North America.
In 1998, Harry Rossdeutscher, the inspiration behind Natura, passed, but his legacy continued through his son, Ralph. At this time, Natura created another industry shift by supplying pillows to furniture stores. This was a unique step because, prior to this, furniture stores sold mattresses but not bedding accessories.
Ingenuity in bedding
By 2000, we had outgrown our first manufacturing facility and relocated to a larger plant.
In 2001, we were the first to create granulated latex to use in pillows as our healthy alternative to down.
In 2005, we continued to the push the limits of bedding and health by designing aromatherapy pillows by creating covers infused with lavender, ylang ylang, and aloe to boost relaxation and sleep.

Natural Innovation
In 2006, we began making washable wool duvets and mattress pads and designed a water repellant wool mattress cover. That same year, we again outgrew our manufacturing plant and relocated to a larger facility.
Notably, in 2007, we were the first to obtain a completely organic certified fire barrier without the use of chemicals.
In 2008, we began to use bio-based foam—a natural material using soy—in our mattresses. We also opened a plant in Texas to better service our growing US customers.
